Description: Students examine a forest habitat for examples of succession and stratification, while working on plant classification and tree keying skills. Nature's Sweet Treat: Maple Syrup

Description: Students search for living examples of producers, consumers and decomposers within a variety of habitats while discussing food chains, population dynamics, adaptation and change. Description: Students participate in an interactive introduction and an exploratory creek hike to find Cincinnati's famous fossils. A two hour program for Pre-K through Grade 2 covers fossils only. Grades 3 and older will investigate geologic processes such as rock formation, soil types, weathering and other forces, past and present, which shape Cincinnati.

Maple Sugaring

Description: Learn how Sugar Maple trees produce sap and why it is collected for syrup only during this brief season. Watch us collect the sap and cook it down. Students taste maple sap in three stages of production. The basic program is one hour in length with half taking place outside. A 1 1/2 hour extension, with half taking place outside, for grades 1 - 5 includes Native Americans' use of maple sap, science experiments, and additional activities.

Description: A lively series of demonstrations introduces students to how air, water, and heat produce Earth's weather. Students will learn how to read a weather map. Lands Across Time - The Geology of Cincinnati

The History and Mystery of Maple Sugaring

Description: From the pioneer to today's processors, this program will trace the history of maple sugaring. Students will assist in tapping, collecting, and processing maple sap. Accessible Treehouse Programs

Description: Everybody's Treehouse in Mt. Airy Forest provides a new perspective on the forest for people of all ages and abilities. Wheelchair accessible, the Treehouse can be the highlight of an educational program for your special needs class. Much of the program takes place in the nearby Oak Ridge picnic / playground area, which is equipped with accessible bathrooms (in season). Program topics and activities appropriate for your students can be worked out with the presenting Naturalist. Whatever is decided, your students will both learn and have fun.

Description: Your students will need their calculators for this program as well, as we examine product packaging to find out if it is excessive, and if it is recyclable. Scales and calculators will be used to determine what percent of the product is packaging. Then we will consider how much of that packaging can be recycled in Cincinnati's green bins. Finally, we will discuss ways that each of us can reduce waste from product packaging.
